
Diesel-Electric Tech Is Making HD Semi Trucks More Capable Than Ever
Diesel-electric powertrains aren’t anything new. In fact, they’ve been around since the 1960s, but what has changed is that the world is now a little more open to electric vehicles because the technology has improved.
They also come with big benefits over pure diesel, like instant torque, meaning that you get maximum pulling power from zero RPM, making it much easier to get a heavy load moving from a full stop. Edison Motors, a Canadian startup, is developing its own line of diesel-electric semi trucks.
They plan to use it to focus on semi trucks with special purposes like log loaders, drilling rigs, and crane trucks. This is what makes them different from Tesla electric trucks is that these big rigs can’t afford to sacrifice payload capacity for over 6 tons of electric batteries because they go way out of the range of charging stations, so they will use more of a diesel-electric powertrain.
Revived for Heavy-Duty Trucking
Diesel-electric trucks have been around since the 1960s, but Edison Motors recently made a smart business move to revive these trucks. Some of the benefits, besides instant torque, include being easy to repair and maintain and capable of lasting for years on the road.
The pricing on these models are said to be about 25% more than what you’d pay for a regular diesel powertrain. You can also buy regular diesel powertrains from Edison Motors.
Major Milestone for Edison Motors
On August 9, 2026, Big D, Edison’s heavy haul vocational truck, finally hit their custom test track in Donald, British Columbia. It was recorded on the Live Edison Podcast #18. This massive 500,000-pound heavy-haul rig was outfitted with an oilfield Texas bed rig.
Around the same time that they put Big D on a test track, its Class 8 diesel-electric hybrid trucks received approval from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for manufacturing. That also means that drivers can officially drive this truck on the road.
Now, it may leave you wondering why Edison Motors went through so many regulatory hoops to get this set up. One of the big reasons why is possibly because they didn’t want to have to deal with recalls, so they took their time getting this set up. Recalls can be very expensive.
What Does the Motor Look Like?
The diesel-electric powertrain on Big D was a Scania diesel rated at 500 kW and with its electric motor, it gets 1800 kW. When you combine the two motors, it generates 2400 horsepower. That means you can pull loads anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 pounds!
The electric motor in this truck can reduce diesel consumption by up to 70%, leaving you to save a lot of money on diesel. Generally speaking, you might get 3 hours of pure electric running time.
