Grand Jury Indicts Eight over $4.49 Million Cargo Theft Scheme
Recently, a cargo theft gang has been indicted on criminal charges for stealing over $4.49 million in goods using logistics information they received from hackers. The hackers would penetrate legitimate delivery operations and commit fraudulent pickups and deliveries.
Ultimately, they would use a phishing scam to steal the shipping information. They would impersonate a real trucking carrier to win bids on the load board. District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. would say that many small businesses suffered harm because of this theft, and unfortunately, some of them won’t be able to recover from those losses.
Large-scale freight theft has been growing recently across the US. This is one case, and at Trucker Social, we’d like to bring you the details of this case.
What Allegedly Happened?
From October 2025 to April 2026, Uzbek national Mordullo Khasanov, who led the cargo theft gang, was targeting goods like luxury cheeses, copper, steaks, and cigarettes from trucks hauled across state lines. This was a brazen multi-million-dollar retail theft conspiracy.
Khasanov was commonly referred to by his alias Murad. Rather than violent tactics common to mob robberies, the group instead relied heavily on modern technology.
When the total came up with what was stolen, it reached:
$3.3 million in stolen cigarettes
$432,000 in stolen gourmet cheeses
$295,000 worth of beef
$266,000 worth of stolen copper wire
$165,000 worth of lamb shipments
The crew would allegedly use cybercrime to grab insider logistics intelligence. Once they had that information, they would arrive at a warehouse in Virginia, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey, and they would confidently present themselves as the authorized courier.
They would simply drive up, take the freight, and drive away with it. They would then quickly offload those goods onto the black market.
When detectives first discovered what was happening, they uncovered a massive haul of stolen cigarettes destined for Tennessee, but being stashed in a Bronx storage facility.
The Evidence
Law enforcement officials have collected a mountain of evidence against this cargo theft gang. Not to mention, in the state of New York, because the value of the cargo stolen exceeded $1 million, each member could face up to 20 years in prison.
The prosecution has access to multiple things like:
WhatsApp message logs
Fraudulent shipping manifests
Highly incriminating photos
Authorities also allege that there is evidence of Khasanov loading stolen meat onto his personal Range Rover and actively participating in the illegal sale of stolen copper.
All of those accused of this crime have pleaded not guilty. The other issue with this is that authorities say the stealing of these goods could artificially inflate the prices at local supermarkets.
What Do You Think?
One of the recent trends is that freight theft, despite being on a 5% year-on-year decline, is still at a historic high. At Trucker Social, we would love to see what you think about all of this. As a trucker, have you ever dealt with someone stealing your freight or do you know of someone who has had their freight stolen?
