Motor Carriers Face Operational Disruptions Following "Motus" Rollout
The FMCSA launched Motus, the new registration system, on May 14, 2026. Since the launch, motor carriers have seen no shortage of disruptions. When they first pitched this new system, they said it was a modernized and secure registration system.
In mid-May, when the new system rolled out, many found it to fall far short of that label. Persistent technical problems and big operational impacts were plaguing both brokers and motor carriers. If you have to rely on information found within the system, you’re going to have a bad time.
Unfortunately, because of government incompetence, their issues directly impact the ability of motor carriers and brokers to stay compliant with the new system. Understanding this system can save you serious headaches later. At Trucker Social, we’d like to take a look at this system to give you what you need to know about it.
Temporary Pause
Motus has had so many problems that the FMCSA chose to temporarily pause the new system until they could work out the technical issues. The new system faced many problems. One of the big problems was that motor carriers couldn’t claim their USDOT number.
The temporary pause means that you don’t have to worry about enforcement or receiving a fine for the time being, but it would still be a good idea to try to understand the system.
Another alternative that many trucking carriers have been opting for is to hire someone who can understand it for them and ensure compliance. Shippers and brokers are also struggling because they need to vet the motor carriers, but to do that, they need up-to-date information to ensure compliance and lower the risks within a supply chain.
Why Was Motus Temporarily Paused?
They temporarily paused Motus because of widespread technical issues. Some of the issues that you might encounter include:
Users struggled with inconsistent records in Motus and SAFER related to the registration status.
Carriers tried to update company information but found it was delayed.
Companies tried but were unable to claim their USDOT numbers.
When they would submit an application to the new authorities, they would find the process delayed.
What Should You Do in the Meantime?
While waiting for Motus to stabilize, you should review the company data found within the FMCSA system. You may also want to delay any non-urgent system updates. At the same time, you will want to maintain physical and digital records of your attempt to stay compliant.
For motor carriers, other actions you might take include:
Take screenshots of screen errors, frozen portals, and submission errors.
For payments that appear stuck, show a timestamp of it.
Submit online support tickets through the FMCSA website
Motus was Also Meant to Prevent Fraud
Besides modernizing the system, Motus was designed to weaponize anti-fraud measures across the supply chain. When they created Motus, the FMCSA partnered with IDEMIA, a global identity technology leader. Together, they planned to capture and verify all documents to block shell companies and fraudulent DOT registrations that were a big problem before.
Previously, they considered this a multi-million-dollar crisis for American trucking. It led to chameleon carrier schemes, cargo theft, and double-brokering.
Under Motus, it creates an audit trail where the FMCSA can now follow fraudulent activities with greater ease to stop criminal activity.
Be Prepared: There are No Extensions
For motor carriers unprepared for Motus, the FMCSA will grant no extensions, so you need to be ready when it hits. The FMCSA has had strong words saying, “Be prepared or face disruption.” Even though we’re currently on a temporary pause, you still want to make sure that you are ready for when it resumes because they will show no leniency to those who are not ready.
Why Worry Yourself with Compliance? Hire a Trusted Compliance Partner
Obviously, most people right now do not love the new Motus system because it creates a huge hassle for many in a system that doesn’t even currently work. Rather than worrying about compliance, you can actually hire someone to handle the compliance headaches for you.
