There are some major theatrical releases this August 2026. They’re worth checking out whether you’re in the truck on the road or at home with the family.

Dog Stars

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Where to Watch: Theaters; expected to eventually release on Hulu or Disney+
Based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller, Dog Stars puts you in the setting of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world. The story is about a virus that devastated humanity. Anyone who survives faces roaming scavengers known as Reapers.
The cast has some Oscar-nominated actors and actresses, including Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce.
The movie was supposed to be released in Spring 2026, but they held it back until August. If you want character-driven survival stories, give this one a watch. If you’re looking for something more fast-paced, this might not be the right choice for you.
Coyote vs Acme
Release Date: August 28, 2026

Starring: John Cena, Will Forte, Lana Condor, Tone Bell, P.J. Byrne, Kenneth Choi
Genre: Comedy
Where to Watch: Theaters
Especially if you want that classic Looney Tunes charm, this movie takes you into a courtroom packed with comedy. After decades of injuries, Wiley Coyote has decided to sue Acme for malfunctioning gear. Yup, malfunctioning gear. He’s going after Acme Corporation in this unusual legal battle that plays out in a highly original way.
John Cena plays Buddy Crane, one of the slick corporate lawyers who fights for Acme. Will Forte plays Kevin Avery, a low-rent lawyer who takes on this case. Once you start watching this, you’ll find it hard to believe that Warner Bros. Discovery chose to shelve this one back in 2022 as a tax write-off. Luckily, Ketchup Entertainment helped to save it.
Expect to see all the best Looney Tunes, like Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Sylvester, and many more.
The Whisper Man

Starring: Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, Owen Teague, Michael Keaton
Genre: Crime Thriller
Where to Watch: Netflix
This is a psycho serial-killer movie, complete with its own urban-legend jingle. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. It may not have the depth or brilliance of movies like “Silence of the Lambs,” or “The Sixth Sense,” but this one will get your adrenaline pumping.
The Whisper Man leans heavily on its twists and turns with its menacing plot full of grisly murders. The acting here is powerful and genuinely gripping. One complaint that has been said about this movie is that it is a slow burner.

Outer Banks: Season 5

This treasure-hunting drama returns for a final season on August 20, 2026.
This last season is a final and emotional, action-packed drama, tying up loose ends from the previous season. The show is entertaining, has good acting, and incredible soundtracks.
The show has been allowed to end on its own terms, despite the fact that Netflix didn’t want to fully let it go. The Pogues are out for revenge after JJ suddenly died in Morocco. Groff is trying to escape with the priceless Blue Crown while being hunted down.
Revival: Season 1
Release Date: August 24, 2026
Directed by: Amanda Row and Samir Rehem
Starring: Melanie Scrofano, Romy Weltman, David James Elliott, and Andy McQueen
Genre: Supernatural Horror
Where to Watch: Netflix, Peacock
The setting takes place in rural Wisconsin, where someone who was recently deceased suddenly comes back to life. Unlike zombies, those revived look and appear just as they did before. This all starts to cause chaos, and there was a brutal murder where single mother Dana Cypress must discover who was behind the killing.
This was originally released in June 2025 on SYFY, but it’s now coming to Netflix. It was already on Peacock.
