Trucking Industry Suffers 221 Trucking Bankruptcies in 2026

October 31, 2026•3 min read

Previously, we reported how the trucking industry had 16 bankruptcies in August alone. That number pales in comparison when you look at the full year where we have had 221 bankruptcies since the start of 2026, according to data from Bloomberg.

Rising diesel prices, shrinking profit margins, and mounting debt have all contributed to the current market. Many of the trucking companies filing for bankruptcy now were launched during the COVID-era. They came into being during a trucking boom, and they never had to deal with a downturn in the market like we currently face.

Fuel prices, which in the worst of times, account for up to 40% of a trucking company’s operating expenses, have reached unsustainable levels.

Small Carriers Feeling It the Worst

An estimated 66% of small carriers report either having flat revenue or revenue that’s down since the previous year. Small carriers mean anyone who runs a trucking company with 20 trucks or fewer. Of those who reported struggling, 40% said that they believed they may need to leave trucking in the next 6 months.

Chip Lane, an attorney for a bankruptcy law firm, said that trucking companies right now are one of the biggest bankruptcy filers.

One of the reasons why small trucking companies face such difficult circumstances is because they often lack the funding to buy semi-trucks outright. They have to take on more debt to do it, which leaves them more defenseless than say a big trucking corporation like Swift or Schneider.

How the COVID-Era Impacts Us Now

The COVID-era was a boom time for the trucking industry. During that time, the demand was high for trucking, and they couldn’t keep the shelves stocked fast enough. You had a government giving out generous loans with highly favorable interest rates. Everyone was making money. It created a dream for trucking, and it brought many into becoming an owner-operator.

What we see now is what happened after COVID ended. The rates plummeted. Many of the companies that had tons of work were suddenly unable to find it. This created a huge downturn, and it led to more trucking companies going belly-up.

On top of the diesel prices, we’ve been working in a freight recession.

Bad loans have also contributed to these bankruptcies. For example, many of the smaller companies depend on adjustable rate loans. They pose a risk because they can fluctuate based on market conditions. With a fixed-rate loan, your monthly rate is always the same. Having the other type can rise without warning.

When the benchmark rate climbs, you can find yourself paying back more than your personal income allows, leaving you struggling for air.

Bankruptcies: Only the Tip of the Iceberg

Previously, we said there were 40% of small trucking companies who expected to vanish in the next 6 months. That number suggests that we’ve only seen the beginning of the 221 trucking company bankruptcies.

As hard as the industry has been, the bankruptcies are a type of market mechanism. With each of the trucking companies gone, it helps to end the freight recession. The reason being that right now, we have too much capacity for too little freight. It pushes the spot rates below a survival level. The bankruptcies help to rebalance the current imbalance.

Those who survive in this market will come out sitting better toward the end if they play their cards right because they will have greater pricing power.
