How Truck Drivers Can Eat Better on the Road
U.S. truckers rank as one of the most obese professions, alongside police officers, firefighters, social workers, and massage therapists. Eating healthy on the road poses one of the greatest challenges facing truckers today. Especially among longhaul truckers, an estimated 70% of truckers would be medically classified as obese.
Healthy eating for truck drivers isn’t impossible if you make the effort, but the problem is that for many, it’s easier to grab the easy food at the truck stop. The temptation is big. Tight schedules and limited food options at truck stops often make it seem hard to get healthy food. To pull it off successfully, you need to bring your meals from home. Let’s tackle this common problem that truckers often face.
Don’t Overuse Truck Stops for Food
You deal with two problems when you eat at truck stops. First, they often overprice the meals at truck stops. Expect it to cost anywhere from 15% to 50% more than regular groceries or fast-food restaurants. Second, you won’t find much for healthy meals for truckers. Many truckers fall into the trap of always getting their meals at truck stops.
You have a couple of things you can do to avoid this. First, you can buy your food at home and bring healthy meals on the road with you. Store it in your fridge. You can also order your groceries and have them delivered to your truck.

Prepping Meals at Home
You might cook your meals at home before you go out on the road and store them in tupperware containers. Not only does it cost less, but you receive better nutrition when you take food from home. Prepping your meals from home also keeps you from impulse buying.
Let’s say you commonly don’t get a lot of home time because you do over-the-road trucking. You could stay at a hotel to do the meal prep or even prepare the meals from your car.
Keep It Simple
Don’t overdo your meal prep. It doesn’t require extensive food preparation. If you want to know how healthy eating for truck drivers works best, keep it simple. You’ll stick with it much longer and have an easier time. Focus on keeping your meals simple and nutritious. You can put a slow-cooked chicken breast with vegetables in a crockpot and come out much further ahead financially than if you bought it at a truck stop.
Beware of the Snacks and Beverages You Choose
Many truckers choose the most convenient snacks on the road like chips, donuts, pastries, and candy. You need to carefully consider what snacks you eat. Healthy food for truckers doesn’t need to taste bad. That’s a myth. Greek yogurt and berries, for example, are one choice of a healthy snack that also tastes incredible.
Granola bars, when they use whole food ingredients, will provide sustained and ongoing energy. Just beware of what kind of granola bars you get because many of them are not healthy. The safest way to get healthy granola bars is by making them yourself.
We know of many truckers who will carry around a bottle of Mountain Dew or even Diet Coke. The high amounts of sugar and acids in these drinks can trigger serious chronic diseases and damage your teeth, heart, and liver.
Healthy No-Cook Meals
You can make more than a few healthy meals that require no cooking. Remember, always apply the philosophy of keeping it simple since you won’t have a large kitchen with all the cooking supplies.
Examples of things you can do for no-cook healthy meals include:
Overnight oats: A simple, no-cook breakfast meal, you put the liquid oats overnight into the refrigerator. As they come to a rest, they will soften and turn creamy with a texture like pudding.
Tuna wraps: You can use the tuna you’d get from a can and put it in a wrap, along with tomatoes, olives, cheese, and crunchy veggies.
Caprese sandwich: The caprese sandwich was made from raw ingredients like tomatoes, sweet basil leaves, and creamy fresh mozzarella.
Deli turkey roll-ups: Easy to make and the way you go about it is you add a tender turkey, creamy gravy, and flavorful stuffing.
Plan Your Healthy Meals
Nowadays, there are tons of different apps you can use to plan out a week of healthy meals. Some of them were even designed specifically to match the lifestyle of truckers. An example of an app like this is Eat This Much. This app automatically generates pre-planned meals for you and can generate your grocery list as well. It also can be made to adapt to cooking inside of a limited cab.
